Gartner, "Honestly, I find these numbers quite appalling"

In an article from Gartner regarding Social Media, "Social Media Cannot Deliver Business Value If Employees Are Denied Access",  Andrea DiMaio, points out  what I have been stating for some time now.  That blocking Social Media from organizations hurts both the organization and the employees.

Employees should be empowered to "brand" themselves.  This gives not only credibly to the employee but to the organization who hired them.  It is a straight forward Win-Win.

While chatting with David Coyle, from Gartner(who is an amazingly charming person)

I asked him why he doesn't not make use of twitter with his wealth of ITSM knowledge?

I was told "We are not allowed to".

Fun Fact #2:  Gartner Analysts are not allowed to participate in Social Media

 Eat your own dog food?  How about letting analysts advice be public, but I guess that's not goes against rule #1.

In 1984 as a manager at MCI MIS didn't want me to have a PC. In 1994 working with a large insurance company the project was to suppress Internet at the desktop. According to the Dir of IT at the time "no one needs Internet at the desktop." In 2004 I was engaged in numerous projects to shut-down access to Instant Messaging at the protocol layer. So, here we are again. When will IT management ever learn it's not their job to say "no" but to say, "yes, and here is how to do it safely." ????
